"John Lombardi's fine arts background gives him a sharp eye for the details in boat building"

John Lombardi

(From "Portrait of the Artists as a Young Boat Builder" Chesapeake Bay Magazine, August 1998)

Hailing from Burlington, N.C., John Lombardi had been designing ceramic cookwear for the likes of Niernan Marcus and Bloomingdales for about 10 years when he decided he'd had enough. Making a hard left turn in his career, he went to the Chapman School of Seamanship, got his master's license, became a marine surveyor and ended up becoming the school's fleet engineer.

"I really enjoyed boats--loved boats--and wanted to involve myself in the boating industry," he says. When he finally turned to the construction and repair end of the marine trades, his background initially led him to wood.

"I got involved in restoring all these wood nightmares-Cheory Lees and Chris Crafts that people really loved but that were nightmares to maintain".

John Built a shop at Mobjack Bay and began building a Chris White a 54-foot trimaran called a Hammerhead.

John now  builds custom boats and is building a Kurt Hughes' Trimaran after his 9th Atlantic 42.

He looks forward to building more boats by designers like Dick Newick, Kurt Hughes and Chris White.
